ALLERGIES
We recommend doing a patch test with any product before applying on the entire skin. It is possible to be or become allergic to any ingredient natural or synthetic. NPK Naturals products are hypoallergenic. We avoid ingredients that contain or derived from soy, wheat, corn or nuts such as (peanuts and almond).

Please note: Although shea butter is considered a tree nut, there has been no research or documentations reporting an allergic reaction similar to other nuts such as peanuts, cashews and almonds. This is due to the low protein level in shea butter. Mount Sinai School of Medicine conducted a study and found that shea butter only contains 1/30th of the amount of proteins found in cashews and even less than the amount found in peanuts. Therefore, a severe reaction is very rare. We have a large number of customers with anaphylactic nut allergies who use our shea butter products daily.  Coconut oil and cocoa butter are not considered a tree nut.

If you are allergic to any butters or oils, you will most likely have a break out or rash. This can be a sign of allergy (considered mild). If you have never used a particular ingredient please do a patch test and wait 24 hours. Patch tests are recommended to be done in the morning. Avoid patch tests at night or before going to sleep.

THE SUNSCREEN STORY – NATURAL VS CHEMICAL
CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS
Chemical sunscreens use chemicals or a combination of chemicals and minerals to protect against UV rays. These chemicals are absorbed into the skin. Do you ever wonder why you are constantly itching yourself or why your child is breaking out every time you apply sunscreen? That’s because of the ingredients or chemicals used. There are two types of allergies known, contact allergies and photoallergies. Contact allergies are caused by applying the sunscreen anywhere on your skin. You are most likely allergic to one or more of the ingredients. Photoallergies are a result of exposing the sunscreen on your skin to sunlight.  The sunlight reacts to the chemical sunscreen, causing an allergic reaction.  There have been several controversial reports over whether the ingredients in these sunscreens causes cancer. If you are unsure or alarmed, your best option is to look for a natural/mineral based sunscreen.

NATURAL/MINERAL SUNSCREENS:
Natural sunscreens are usually made from natural ingredients such as butters and oils. The only active ingredient(s) are zinc oxide and/or titanium oxide. Natural/mineral sunscreens are technically “sunblocks” as the minerals such as the zinc sit on the skin to block the sun. However, the name “sunblock” is not favoured for retail purposes. The zinc oxide and titanium oxide leave a white residue on the skin when applied (this helps with blocking UV rays). Although, this is not ideal for some people, we prefer to have a bit of white residue on our skin instead of applying the chemical sunscreens.

FRAGRANCE
We do not use any fragrance in our products. All of our butters are scented naturally using essential oils. Fragrances are a combination of natural and synthetic ingredients most of which are chemicals. Essential oils are primarily produced through the process of steam distillation. Essential oils usually carry a very mild scent.
